Position: Principal and Financial Advisor

Dan Moisand is a fee-only financial advisor in our Melbourne, Florida office and regarded by many as one of America’s top financial advisors for retirees and near retirees. A happily married father of two, he is a past national President of the Financial Planning Association, and has been featured as one of America’s top financial planners by at least 10 financial planning publications.

Retirees and those approaching retirement will have a hard time finding an advisory firm better equipped to serve them and their families than Moisand Fitzgerald Tamayo, and Dan is one reason why. A glimpse of his expertise can be found in his writings. For the general public, he has been a regular contributor of Q&A columns for Florida Today since 2005 and MarketWatch, a personal finance site of the Wall Street Journal, since 2013. See his recent MarketWatch articles on his author page and older ones here.

The press and the financial planning profession rely on him for answers as well. Since 2010, he has been a monthly contributor of a column about advising retirees for Financial Advisor. He was a professional issues columnist for the Journal of Financial Planning from 2008-2015 and has also been published in Financial Planning, Investment Advisor, Wealth Manager/Advising Boomers, Niewuwsbrief financiele planning (Netherlands) and on Network FP (India). He is the only two time winner of the Journal of Financial Planning‘s Call for Papers competition. He is a frequent source to a variety of publications and media and has appeared in Smart Money, NY Times, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and USA Today among others.

Dan has over 29 years of experience but recognition began in 2002 when he was dubbed a “Future Star” by Financial Advisor magazine and made Worth magazine’s list of the top 250 Advisors in America. Since then, he was named one of the most influential professionals in financial planning in Financial Planning magazine, Investment Advisor (twice) andAccounting Today (twice). He has been lauded as one of America’s top financial planners in Florida Today, Journal of Financial Planning, Research, Solutions, Wealth Manager, and the Wall Street Journal Online.

Moisand is the subject of a two-page profile in The History of Financial Planning (Wiley & Sons, 2009) and at just 44 years of age, he was mentioned as a notable in the Lifetime Achievement category of Financial Planning’s 2011 Influencer Awards. In 2012, Space Coast Business named him one of Brevard County’s “Most Admired Business People”

More recently, for its 15th anniversary issue in June of 2013, Investment News named Dan one of the 15 people that “transformed the business of financial advice” and in an extensive 2019 Investment News feature dedicated to the 50thanniversary of the meeting that started the financial planning profession, Dan was featured as one of “twenty most influential men and women” in the history of financial planning.

These accolades stem from the work he has done to increase professionalism among financial planners and the respect peers show him for how he works with clients. From 1999-2001, he served on the CFP Board of Practice Standards, helping to write the standards that apply to CFP licensees in the United States. In 2007, Dan completed five years of service on the national Board of Directors of the Financial Planning Association (FPA), including serving as its President and Chairman. In 2008, he was Chairman of the Discipline and Ethics Commission of the CFP Board, hearing misconduct cases involving CFP licensees and the standards he helped establish. He served as a Trustee of the Foundation for Financial Planning from 2014-2019 and will be a member of the Board of Directors of CFP Board from 2020-2023.

His friendly style has garnered him speaking engagements to planner groups on five continents. On behalf of FPA, he has led delegations of financial planners to Russia (2008), China (2011), India (2013), and Australia (2018).

Dan received his Bachelor of Science in Finance from Florida State University in 1989.
